This task is particularly designed for the class Academic TOEFL iBT, level 4, with an aim to improve your listening skill. Included in this task is a section about the aims of today's lesson, then there will be question(s) and the suggested resource(s) to find the answers. Later than that is a listening practice session. You will also learn how to submit your group work and how you will be evaluated in this assignment in the last section of this paper.
If you are eager with the thought that having a class in the computer lab means you will have more time for playing and less time for studying, then you are right, especially when I am the person in charge. In a couple of minutes you will have to 'play' extensively on the computer and the Internet to gather facts and answer my questions...
Are you ready? Let's see what we can achieve after today's lesson.
The aims of this assignment
- Make you more aware of the differences between TOEFL iBT and the previous form of TOEFL in terms of both test form and test taker's abilities.
- Improve note taking skill, a basic but decisive step in taking the listening section
When you understand all the points above, move on to the next section. If you have a question, ask me now.
The tasks
- Find information and discuss the differences between 2 TOEFL forms
- Listen to (a) designated exercise(s), take notes and then discuss with your partners to agree on the main points
- Write reports and post them on this blog
Detailed instructions can be found in the next section
Process
- Make groups of 2 or 3 students.
- Vote a group leader to manage the time and assign tasks to the members.
- Discuss then answer the following question. Make sure you take notes of all the ideas from the discussion:
- http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/TOEFL/pdf/TOEFL_Tips.pdf
- Now open Notepad software, enter your names, then write a report on what your group have found and save it to a safe place [first report]
- Listen to the assigned exercises, which will be written on the board, for ONE time, note down the main ideas
- Jump to the next listening passage as soon as you finish the first one
- When the listening passages are over, get back to your group, discuss, and write up summaries in 5 sentences for each exercise (one for each)
- Open Notepad software, enter your names, compose your report, and save it to a safe place [second report].
- Log in using the account provided by your teacher
- Go to the end of the blog, copy and paste your the [first report]'s content into "your comments". Remember to type your names in 'Your name', and type the security code in the box 'Security code'. Click the "SUBMIT" button to post your assignment.
- If you are not satisfied with your post, use the "Edit" button to correct it.
- Now you do the same thing with the [second report].
