Preparation
My class is low elementary, so my hand-out include a list of vocabulary items about public school, private school, pros and cons, defend, debate... so that later on I dont have to explain these terms again.Instruction
- Explain the terms (meaning & pronunciation) with examples (such as, what are the private school in the area)- Break the class into 2 big groups and assign the topic
- Tell them to discuss the pros of their topic and the cons of the other side's topic; note down the ideas when they talk
- Then elicit the ideas and put them on the board. One mark is given for each pro/ con contributed. Sometimes it can be hard to judge some ideas, like which school has more workload (?)
- Conclude the activity, praise the contribution of ideas, and the winners

This is first used in a KET prep class, which should be lower than Ele levels. The debate resulted in short & simple sentences without much elaboration.
