SELA - A learning project for 52TA

SELA is a project suited for English-major freshmen at Nha Trang University. All contributions and suggestions, together with the project progress will be updated here. It first runs on Oct 11, 2010 with specifications as follows:

Aims:

  • Develop listening & speaking skill
  • Build up knowledge in English collocation and expressions
  • Develop in the students a habit of studying English at any time, any where
  • Develop students' awareness of native speaker's intonation
  • Develop students' pronunciation & intonation

Requirements:

  • Each student owns a copy of the specified audio book, and listen to it at their convenience
  • Students can read the script in an text book provided in soft copy
  • The audio book and text book can be copied from the monitor or the teacher

Procedures:

  • Students are encouraged to register for the next presentation, or the monitor determine the list
  • Registered students then reproduce the conversations by playing different roles in the story; they should put a strong focus on intonation (since the language is simple), or at least imitate the intonation in the audiobook; the conversations should be combined with guestures and actions when applicable.
  • Audience: listen & learn the expressions at home and judge the perfomance in class with their cripts closed
  • Students with low score and reregister for the next presentation
 *** presetation limit: 2 conversations per day, 10 minutes per conversation

Scoring for presentation - PRESENTATION SCORE:

The performance is graded on a scale from 0 to 10; this score makes up 10% of the term score:
  • 8-10: the whole conversation is reproduced, speech is loud and clear, strong stress is made on important words
  • 5-7: the whole conversation is reproduced, speech is audible, intonation is sometimes not appropriate
  • 0-4: the conversation is partly reproduced, speech is barely comprehensible, monotone

Scoring for language development - ASSIGNMENT SCORE:

The quiz will also be graded on the scale from 0 to 10; this makes up 10% of the term socre, and the quiz can be any of the following formats:
  • A conversation will be played back and students write down all the expressions they hear
  • Five random expressions will be read and students make sentences with each of them

The project initialized on 11 Oct and is due to have first presentation on 18 Oct. However, there was no play on the stage. Later, I learnt that the students did not understood parts of my instruction in class, and I had to go through the instruction once again in their mother tongue. I even offered them my cell phone so that they could always reach me if there was any further problem.

On 25 of October, the second day of the project has 1 very successful reproduction of the first chapter. While I'm so happy about the outcome, the second presentation goes no where because one of the presenter faints after some lines of the dialogue. Am I pushing her too hard? That's kinda weird, 'cos its not that much of pressure. NVM, I get them to do the chapter again in the forth coming week.

The project did not come out as expected. Most students did not work as hard as they should for their own shake; they just worked enough for the score. More than half failed to do the quiz about the idioms, though the rest found the idioms and the project more than just useful.
