In the previous lesson, we have studied about comparative adjectives and transition words.
In using comparative adjectives, notice the difference between long and short adjectives. A long adjective has more than 2 syllables, ex: boring, cheerful…, and must be used with this structure:
“MORE + long ADJ”.
A short adjective has only one syllable, or 2 syllables with the last ending in ‘y’, ex: bored, good, happy, healthy…, and use this structure:
“short AJD-er”
Transition words are used to show relationship between sentences or paragraphs. Keep in mind that transition words are always separated from the sentence by a comma ‘,’. There are two groups. The first groups of transition words consists of ‘also, in addition, additionally, and too’ to show a similar ideas. The second group includes ‘however, in contrast, on the contrary, and on the other hand’ to show a different or a contrasting idea. Look at this example:
I like football. Also, I like to go fishing on Sunday. However, my father does not like fishing.
In this exercise, you are asked to write a short paragraph of 10 sentences about a comparison between 2 familiar things around you. Choose one of topics below:
+ your house and your friend’s house
+ your school and your friend’s school
+ you and your friends/ brothers/ sisters.
In this writing, you must use comparative adjectives appropriately. Also, remember to use transition words to link ideas between sentences. Having a topic sentence is also a must when you write about anything.
