Instead of asking the students to stand up to introduce themselves and the others, which could be freaking, I adapt this activity from American Headway Preintermediate, p. 9.

Preparation

- A handout with two sections. Section A for students to write about their hobies: music (song?), film (film?), sport(sport?), (and more) and what they dislike
- Section B is for them to meet and write about a partner: Name, Town, Job, Age, Marriage status (and more)

Instruction

- Get the Ss to sit in a big circle
- Ask Ss to fill the information about themselves - Section A
- Ask Ss to write their name on the back of Section B, then walk around and choose a partner to talk and note down information in Section B
- Ask Ss to sit down and hand the Section Bs around until you tell them to stop
- Now Ss take turn to introduce other people using the info in Section B. When someone is introduced, (s)he will stand up and continue to talk about herself/ himself using the info in Section A.

Comments

- I couple this activities with shooting a clip with my cell phone. Believe it or not, the Ss are crazy about seeing themself on cams, so the class turn out very noisily involving.
- Be sure to make Section B go wild, else the talks will go clockwise (but this does not sound like a problem at all, huh?)

Hand-out

My Nokia E63 works quite well in making the clip. Next time I will make a Video on a DVD (a rewritable one) and show them in class.
