Internship cover letter (ICL)

Cover letter, or accompanying, explanatory letter, is a letter sent with another document or package, providing necessary or additional information. In my own experience, people would think of cover letter as a means of communication to apply for something (a job, or in this case, an internship). One may also suggest the phrase "application letter", however, it is more common to say an "application form", and when we mention a form, it is definitely NOT a letter.

This post includes the information that I composed from various sources for my students, who are seniors and are ready for some real working experience.

Understanding about an ICL

First, have a look at what to include in your letter at CVtips.com. They are about cover letters in general, but you can manage to understand the basic of an ICL with their help.

Sample Intership Cover letter

Secondly, here comes a complete sample of ICL, so that you can envision what your letter will look like:

Mr. John Smith
Electronics Company
1000 Radio Drive
Pittsburgh, PA 15205
Dear Mr. Smith:

I recently came across your internet ad searching for a marketing intern. My combination of previous work experience and education make me a perfect fit for this position.

I have several years of work experience in the marketing field as an intern with Computer, Inc., as well as 21 credit hours in business and marketing at the University of Pittsburgh. My past experience has convinced me that I would like to pursue a full-time career in marketing after graduating college.

On top of my desire to work for your company, I also feel that an internship with Electronics Company would benefit the both of us. Your company is always thinking of new and innovative marketing techniques, and I have several years of experience creating marketing campaigns.

I am confident that an interview would be a great way to discuss this position further. If I do not hear from you within the next two weeks, I will call you to discuss a meeting. You can reach me via phone at 412-555-9000 or email at sjones@yahoo.com.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Steve Jones

More samples

Third, these samples illustrating different cases of applying for training periods in various occupations, which can be found in this page about internship. Its a pity there is no such a thing particularly relevant for my students, whose major is language translation/interpretation. Nevertheless, their creativity together with these could help them come up with a persuasive paper, I believe.

What to do next?

Lastly, if you think that sending an application package to a prospective employer is all that you need for an internship, you are dead wrong. Look at how you can stand out of the crowd and get the job you want in the process explained in this page.

I guess that should make a clear view about writing an internship cover letter. So what are you waiting for? Write some papers; maybe one of yours could be a a perfect sample for the juniors.
